Opening this new series, I'll look at the small place boasting one of the longest place names in the world. If you think tongue-twisting Brazilian names of Tupi origin, like Itaquaquecetuba, are complicated enough, take a deep breath - this village goes by the name of LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH, which is a description of the location (in Welsh), translating into English as "St Mary's Church in the hollow of the white hazel trees, near the rapid whirlpool, by St Tysilio's church and near a red cave". (I am one of the few people outside Wales who can actually say it reasonably well, thanks to my Welsh mother). Ah, and to get there - it's the first station after Bangor on the North Wales line.

Abrindo esta nova série, vou falar do vilarejo com um dos maiores nomes do mundo. Sim, se achar que os nomes brasileiros de origem tupi, como Itaquaquecetuba, travem a língua, respire fundo - esta pequena localidade leva o nome de LLANFAIRPWLLGWYNGYLLGOGERYCHWYRNDROBWLLLLANTYSILIOGOGOGOCH, que é uma descrição do local na língua galesa. Traduzindo para o português, "Igreja de Santa Maria, no fundo das aveleiras brancas, perto do remoinho rápido ao lado da Igreja de São Tisílio, e próximo a uma caverna vermelha". (Sou uma das poucas pessoas de fora de Gales que consegue pronunciar razoavelmente bem esta palavra, graças à minha mãe que nasceu no País de Gales).
