4 - VISIT THE PANTANAL
If you are into wildlife and nature, and also enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, then you must not miss the Pantanal, which covers a significant part of the Brazilian States of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. It is about 10 times the size of the Everglades and is the largest freshwater wetland in the world. The Pantanal, which occupies some 2300 square kilometres, is thriving with wildlife, more than a thousand different species to be precise. There is also evidence of different types of vegetation, including Amazonian and cerrado.
One piece of advice, explore the southern part near Campo Grande rather then entering through Poconé. I don’t know if I was unusually unlucky, but when I went there with a group of students we went to the northern part and there were only flamingoes and alligators. In the South, so I’ve been told, the Pantanal is much better. Travel is much better in the dry season - another advantage is that the rivers are shallow and the fish can be observed. Fishing is allowed (subject to restrictions) but hunting is not.
There are very few major roads, and the one I experienced (the Transpantaneira) was - although this was 20 years ago - a dirt track with very precarious bridges and alligators waiting in the rivers with their mouths open. The best way of exploring the Pantanal was of course the Train of Death, but sadly this does no longer run. So the only option is to travel to Campo Grande and make your way from there, taking in the aptly named city of Bonito.
4 - VISITE O PANTANAL
Se você gosta de animais selvagens e da natureza em geral, e também gosta da vida calma do campo, então não pode deixar de visitar o Pantanal, que ocupa grande parte dos estados de Mato Grosso e de Mato Grosso do Sul. O Pantanal é 10 vezes maior que os Everglades, nos Estadod Unidos, é o maior pântano de água doce do mundo. O Pantanal ocupa uma área de mais ou menos 2300 quilômetros quadrados e apresenta mais de mil espécies diferentes de animais. Há também evidências de diversos tipos de vegetação, inclusive a vegetação amazônica e do cerrado.
Um conselho que dou é de visitar a parte sul, perto de Campo Grande, e não a parte norte, perto de Poconé. Não sei se levei azar, mas quando visitei a área com um grupo de estudantes visitamos a parte norte e só vimos flamingos e jacarés. Ouvi falar que na parte Sul o Pantanal é bem melhor. A viagem fica melhor na época sem chuvas - outra vantagem é que os rios ficam rasos e os peixes podem então ser observados. A pesca é permitida (sujeito a restrições) mas a caça não.
Há poucas estradas, e a que conheci (a Transpantaneira) era - embora isso tenha sido 20 anos atrás - uma série de precárias pontes com os jacarés esperando nos rios com as bocas abertas. A melhor forma de conhecer o Pantanal era através do Trem da Morte, mas infelizmente não circula mais. Assim, a única opção é viajar a Campo Grande e explorar a partir daí, incluindo a cidade que possui o nome apropriado de Bonito.
