The Romance of the Dual Form / O Romance da Forma Dual

THE ROMANCE OF THE DUAL FORM

In these days of the Internet, it is not so common to quote sweet nothings to your betrothed, as it is much easier to put finger to keyboard, but if you are one of “a pair of star-cross’d lovers” it is still romantic to air words of romance, because, quoting the Bard, “Love is like a red, red rose”.

So the question arises - which is the best language to use when wooing your amour? Most people would say Italian, because the language has a definite romantic touch to it. Indeed, “Io te amo com tutto il mio cuore” sounds much more romantic than the equivalents in some other languages, at least in my opinion.

But you may be surprised to know that the best language to declare your love is Slovenian - as it is a unique language for lovebirds, being one of very few languages with the dual form, for two things (or people) exactly - the plural is only used for 3 or more, as in brat (brother), bratje (3 or more brothers), brata (2 brothers) [1]. As Tjaša Jakob writes, “the dual form is the most wonderful thing about Slovenian - it can be very romantic. I remember the first time I used it with my partner: then I understood the unique beauty of it” [2]. If you are interested in knowing more about the dual form, then see the article by Aleksandra Dergank [3].
When two people are romantically involved, a dual personal pronoun is used, so the use of the dual conveys a sense of closeness and loyalty that using the plural would never convey. Interestingly, Old English had dual forms, but for some reason they were dropped over time.
