Visitors to Brazil over the New Year period shall have two major events to see while they usher the New Year in. A far cry from the icy weather experienced in Central Park or along the banks of the Thames, New Year here is an affair in the baking heat, which in the case of Rio can hit 40 degrees Celsius. Needless to say that most revellers head for the beach on New Year’s Eve.
The best place to be on New Year’s Eve is of course Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, where you can watch a firework display that this year shall last 20 minutes. Official estimates say that over two million people are expected to line the shores of this world-famous beach which was called “The Princess of the Sea” in a famous 1947 samba song [1]. Indeed, the New Year Celebrations in Copacabana are considered the second best in the world after New York [2, 3]. Apart from the fireworks, there shall also be presentations by Brazilian artists and also two famous samba schools, to get people in the mood for the Greatest Show in the Universe, which is Rio’s Carnival, which this year shall be in March.
If you can not make it to Copacabana, other cities along the Brazilian coastline have similar festivities but lacking the glamour of Rio. These include Florianópolis, more specifically Conceição Lake [4], and Salvador, in Bahia.
The other highlight of the New Year period in Brazil is the São Silvestre Race, a 15-km race through the streets of São Paulo. This is a very democratic race, open to anyone willing to participate (there is even a wheelchair category), although victory is reserved for the professionals, with Kenyan athletes usually winning in the end. It starts and finishes on Paulista Avenue, which a few hours afterwards hosts a show similar to that of Copacabana (but without the beach).

Aqueles que visitam o Brasil para a virada do ano têm dois eventos principais a prestigiar enquanto aguardam a entrada do Ano Novo. Bem distante das gélidas temperaturas do Central Park em Nova York ou nas margens do Tâmisa, em Londres, a virada do ano aqui é um evento num calor escaldante, que em terras cariocas pode chegar a 40 graus. Nem precisa dizer que quase todos vão às praias na véspera do Ano Novo.
O melhor lugar para estar na virada do ano é, sem dúvida, a praia de Copacabana no Rio de Janeiro, onde poderá assistir a um deslumbrante show de fogos que este ano durará 20 minutos. Estimativas oficiais dizem que mais que dois milhões de pessoas estarão na praia famosa no mundo tudo que foi chamada de “Princesinha do Mar” num samba famoso de 1947 [1]. De fato, as celebrações do Réveillon em Copacabana são consideradas como as melhores do mundo depois de Nova York [2, 3]. Aleém dos fogos, haverá apresentações de duas escolas de samba cariocas, como se preparando as pessoas para o Maior Show do Universo, o Carnaval Carioca, que este ano será em março.
Se não conseguir vir a Copacabana, outras cidades do litoral brasileiro têm apresentações semelhantes mas sem o glamour do Rio. Estes incluem Florianópolis, especificamente a Lagoa da Conceição na Ilha da Magia [4] e a cidade de Salvador, na Bahia.
O outro ponto alto da virada do ano é a corrida de São Silvestre, uma corrida de 15 km pelas ruas de São Paulo. Esta é uma corrida muito democrática, aberta a qualquer um que deseja participar (há até uma corrida para cadeirantes), mas os louros da vitória estão reservados aos profissionais, com os quenianos normalmente vencendo no final. A corrida começa e termina na Avenida Paulista, que algumas horas após sedia o Show da Virada, parecido com o de Copacabana (mas sem a praia).
