VISIT THE SOUTH OF BRAZIL / VISITE O SUL DO BRASIL
My suggestion today is to visit the South of Brazil, which looks like another country, so strong is the European influence here. If you hail from Europe one advantage is the cooler weather and even snow – although why anyone from blizzard-swept England would take an 18-hour flight to see snow is beyond me.
A good place to start is Curitiba [1], with vast expanses of parks and green areas, with European influence seen in sights like the German Wood. There is an excellent tourist bus service [2] with double-deckers, open top in summer (which, different from London, is not just one Thursday afternoon). Stuff yourself with delicious pasta, all washed down with ice-cream and chocolate sauce, at Madalosso [3], where you can eat as much pasta as you wish for less than 10 quid.
Leaving Curitiba along the Road of Death or the BR-376 (safer now after duplication), you soon cross the border into Santa Catarina, considered Brazil’s most beautiful state [4]. The gateway to the state is Joinville with its strong German influence. From there, visit Blumenau and also Pomerode, the most German town in Brazil. The best time to go is of course October, when Blumenau has its very own Oktoberfest [5, 6]. Then on through Balneário Camboriú to Florianópolis, the Isle of Magic with its many beaches [7].
Moving on, another area of mixed foreign influence, including Treze Tílias, also known as Dreizehnlinden, in the Brazilian Tyrol (Austrian influence)[8]. To see snow, July is the best month, just head for Urubici [9] or São Joaquim. After Laguna, a city steeped in history, you enter Rio Grande do Sul with more beaches at Torres.
Visit the country’s main wine-producing area, and roll back the years by riding a steam train. Here wine is king, but soon you enter Gaúcho territory, where they drink Chimarrão, a very bitter infusion, drunk when the water is still boiling, and eat a good old Gaúcho barbecue, or churrasco, with plenty of meat full of nice tasty fat.
End the journey in Porto Alegre, on the Guaíba River, and wrap it up in style by eating more pasta, or fatty meat if you prefer.
Minha sugestão hoje é visitar o Sul do Brasil, que parece outro país, tão forte é a influência européia. Se você vem da Europa, uma vantagem é o tempo mais ameno e até mesmo a neve – mas não consigo entender porque alguém da gélida Inglaterra iria enfrentar 18 horas de vôo para ver neve.
Um bom ponto inicial é a cidade de Curitiba [1], com vastas áreas verdes e parques, com influência européia visíveis nas atrações como o Bosque Alemão. Há um serviço excelente de ônibus turístico [2] com ônibus de dois andares que são abertos no verão (que, ao contrário da Inglaterra, não se limita a uma quinta-feira de tarde). Coma as deliciosas massas até estourar, acompanhado de um bom sorvete com molho de chocolate, no Madalosso [3], onde você pode comer à vontade por menos de 10 libras.
Saindo de Curitiba pela Rodovia da Morte ou BR-376 (mais segura agora após a duplicação), logo entrará em Santa Catarina, considerado o Estado mais belo do Brasil [4]. A porta de entrada do Estado é Joinville, com influência alemã. Daí, visite Blumenau e Pomerode, a cidade mais alemã do Brasil. A melhor época de visitar a região é outubro, quando Blumenau faz a sua própria Oktoberfest [5, 6]. Continue por Balneário Camboriú a Florianópolis, a Ilha da Magia, com suas várias praias [7].
Mais adiante, outra area de influência estrangeira, inclusive Treze Tílias, mais conhecida como Dreizehnlinden, no Tirol Brasileiro (influência austríaca)[8]. Para ver neve, a melhor época é julho, basta ir a Urubici [9] ou São Joaquim. Depois de Laguna, uma cidade histórica, entre no Rio Grande do Sul, com mais praias em Torres.
Visite a principal região produtora de vinho do país, e volte no tempo andando de Maria Fumaça. Aqui o vinho domina, mas logo entrará em território legitimamente Gaúcho, onde bebem Chimarrão, uma infusão extremamente amarga e que bebem com a água ainda fervente, e comem o legítimo churrasco, com bastante carne cheia de deliciosa gordura.
Termine a sua viagem em Porto Alegre no Rio Guaíba, e termine com estilo comendo mais massas ou, se preferir, carne bastante gordurosa.
